Rules for communication with the deaf
-
Speak slowly and clearly. Use facial expressions and body language.
-
Do not bend your head as a deaf person reads lips and body language.
-
From lips reading deaf people can gather 30 to 60 % of information, everything else is guesses as in the puzzle. Not all deaf people are equally proficient at lips reading. Certain letters seem very similar: b , p, m , f , the , h , g , h, c , s, c , w , f , d , n , t . Therefore, the deaf can not figure out everything from the lips.
-
Our face should be visible, and there shouldn't be light falling on the deaf's eyea, because that way they cannot see well.
-
If a deaf person does not understand us, we use more simple words or write it on a piece of paper.
-
Do not jell.
-
When calling a deaf person, slightly tap on their shoulder or upper arm and establish eye contact.
-
When we can not get the attention of a deaf person, we can stomp with our foot on the floor, for them to feel the vibration, or light a lamp - use a light signal.
-
Take the time to communicate, it is important that you are present here and now.
-
If you fail to establish contact with a deaf person, write it on a piece of paper, asking them to help you and show you how you can communicate with them.
-
Do not eat or have mouth full during a conversation with a deaf person.
-
If you do not understand, ask for the assistance of an interpreter for sign language.
