Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Who are the deaf people?

People who have very little or no functional hearing. They are accompanied by silence in all environments. Information are taken in from visual objects and vibration. They have little or no speech depending on the severity of the hearing loss and the age of onset. Deaf people may use sign language or a combination of speech and sign language. They will often communicate through a sign language interpreter.

Who are the hard of hearing?

Those who accept the sound, but in different quality. They hear only specific frequencies or sounds within a certain volume range. They may rely heavily upon hearing aids and lip reading.

Impairment can be divided into three stages - mild, moderate and severe. You can help the hard of hearing people with hearing aids that facilitate the adoption of sounds from the environment. In most cases, they also have less difficulty in integrating into the communication with the environment. Many times they have speech impairments due to their inability to hear their own voices clearly. The hard of hearing may never learn, or only occasionally use, sign language.

The reasons for deafness are varied: heredity, illness during pregnancy, or after birth injury.

We have to ensure a sign language interpreter for the deaf at all lectures and public events or in wider society, since they get very restricted feedback from the environment.
